I hate to tell you this, but this is extremely common ... and not considered bad practice.
Most dealerships do this, and there's nothing illegal about the practice.
I, myself, have purchased used cars with active and unfixed recalls.
No big deal. Take them to an authorized dealer, have them fixed.
Carmax review in Virginia Beach, Virginia: Terrible
That's what happened with me. I bought a 2015 Nissan Altima and took it to the Nissan dealer to have a warranty repair done.
The Nissan dealer told me that the repair could not be covered because the vehicle had been in an accident and wasn't repaired correctly. The front panel on the frame was bent. I took pictures of everything and took it to CarMax
the service manager *** at CarMax told me that I'm responsible for the damage on the vehicle because they did not sell the vehicle with damage.
I found the website vehiclehistory.com that showed the vehicle was involved in an accident and sold at a salvage auction about 1 year before CarMax sold it to me.
I sent a letter to the general manager and sent a copy to the corporate HQ of CarMax and they still said that they are not responsible for the damage. I have hired an attorney to sue them for fraud.

Yes they do sell many cars that have been in a collision. If they really did the 125 point inspection that they claim to do, this would be apparent to them. My guess is that they really don't inspect there cars.
Yes i think it is a wise move to have any car inspected that you are considering buying from them.
Better advise would be to just NOT BUY FROM CARMAX.

There are many other sites to see carmax reviews, complaints and comments. I happened to Google " why does carmax have so many negative reviews" and found many interesting sites.
carmax was rated 55.02 out of a possible 200 on one of the sites.
I found it sad that in the "friendly" category they received a 9 out of 10!! Take a look around the internet and see what customers are complaining about!
I have also dealt with Carmax on several occasions and NEVER had any problems with them.
I too have sold about 3 cars to them and purchased 1 and always recieved more from them than anywhere else, in fact, if anything i was pleasently surprised and shocked at how much I was given for the cars I sold.
The process has always been very fast, easy and straight forward with no hassels or games.
I'm surprised at all of the complaints but then that's what this website is for. I suggest keeping an open mind and giving them a try.
