CarMax - PLEASE!! READ ALL SMALL PRINT NO MATTER HOW LONG IT TAKES!!
Bought car I wanted from Carmax. The usual sales-tactics for superfluous, monthly costs--to be added to monthly installment total--but mild pressure only; easily countered/quashed.
Left Carmax feeling less "raped" than customers usually feel after car dealership interactions. Received two (2) refunds from Carmax regarding DMV registration: 1) Carmax was unable to file electronically; this with a cryptic disclaimer about the "various reasons" same happens; and 2) a refund for repkacement tags...? I was confused, but dealerships (even in the age of electronic business transactions) have a 90-day window to process DMV paperwork. But still, REFUNDS within one month of purchase?
Was I missing something? The Carmax salesperson promised Carmax "...would take care of DMV licensing, title and registration FOR A YEAR," so I wasn't worried. Still, reviewing my paperwork, there was no mention of this "promise." Sure enough, around mid-July I receive paperwork from DMV saying I must pay $164 by August 8, 2017 for plate renewal and registration. What?!?
But, Carmax said THEY'D take care of this! Nope! Evidently, this practice is COMMON between dealer/consumer, with the consumer usually footing the bill in the end. If the 90-days overlaps renewal date, a date WHICH the dealer knows, the consumer WILL PAY the renewal fee.
How does a car buyer avoid this? MAKE SURE ANY AND ALL "PROMISES," DECLARATIONS, AND AGREEMENTS BETWEEN YOU AND THE DEALER IS IN WRITING, IN THE CONTRACT--BEFORE YOU SIGN. Otherwise, you'll pay. It may not seem like much, in the scheme of things, but consider this excellent education; were I purchasing a 'high-end" car, my DMV bill could be in the thousands of dollars!
Not a great present when you've just dropped thousands on the car itself. To Carmax: nice parry/thrust. I should've caught this littke shimmy.
Hopefully, my experience will help other buyers out there. Carmax=less headaches, but STILL a dealership...
Reason of review: Problems with payment.
