I had signed up for Carmax email alerts every time a vehicle would match my criteria. One of the alerts listed a '13 Toyota Tacoma Baja, which I was very interested in.

I contacted my local Carmax dealer to see if I could get the vehicle transferred. Sales associate assured me it was now securely in my name, and the transfer would take place within the week. I continued to monitor this vehicle on the website, and soon thereafter, it showed the vehicle was no longer available. Sales associated notified me it had been sold out from under me.

Strike 1. Several days later, it showed up as available once again. Looks like customer returned it within the 5 day period. Contacted associate again and said they would work on getting truck transferred to me.

A few days later, vehicle again was sold out from under me. Strike 2. Believe it or not, the truck was brought back again and was listed as available. I was quite skeptical at this point as to why this truck was not to the previous customers' liking.

I decided to run my own carfax report. Sure enough, Carfax report showed odometer reading of 75,845 miles. Carmax listed this truck as only having 35,000 miles. Pictures of odometer confirmed this bogus reading.

Clearly, Carmax had rolled the mileage back in a blatant attempt to defraud their customers.

Things happen for a reason. Had it not been for 2 previous owners returning this truck, I may not have ran my own report. Fortunately, I never actually purchased the truck so I never had to deal with the headache of returning and hoping for a hassle free process.

My warning to anybody considering a vehicle from Carmax, do NOT rely on the auto history report provided by Carmax. I'm convinced they knowingly edited out the latest odometer reading that was clearly evident on a Carfax report.

Pay the 40 bucks in advance for an accurate Carfax report as it will save you thousands in the long run.

Reason of review: Not as described/ advertised.

Preferred solution: Carmax needs to relist this vehicle with the unrolled back odometer reading, and price accordingly..

CarMax Pros: Sales associate was pleasant.

CarMax Cons: Attempt to defraud a customer.

Location: Bakersfield, California

I work at CarMax and when a vehicle is in transport or on hold for a customer it shows up as not available on the website. A sales consultant can be running a finance application on that vehicle or placing a hold on that vehicle once it has been transferred for a customer.

Just because it shows up as not available does not mean that it has been sold. CarMax guarantees no roll backed odometers, sometimes repair shops or government agencies incorrectly report mileage to CarFax/ Autocheck.

Thanks for info!

Carfax is sometimes wrong. 75k miles for a 2013 is a lot of miles.

That's a possibility. But the issue appears to be Carmax didn't even list the entry in their own auto history report.

As part of their highly touted 120 point vehicle inspection, this should have been found and at least noted. It does seem a little fishy Carmax would leave this mileage entry out of their own report. Would you risk spending $32,000 on a vehicle that quite possible has a true blue book value of $27,000 with twice the mileage?

I know I wouldn't.

No, I wouldn't. Their 120 point inspection is a joke.
