When you buy, you pay retail price, including all fees, tag, tag and title. When you sell, you get wholesale price. When you buy a brand new car, the depreciation the day you drive it off the lot is even worse.

When I told him that the Jeep dealership was offering me between 14-16k, he told me just to take it there and that CarMax would not pay me that amount. But I said, "you haven't even appraised my truck yet." So then he started telling me my truck is old and blah blah...

We purchased a VW van from Carmax and immediately had major issues with it. Within a year we had the transmission replaced, the engine rebuilt, the breaking system redone, the A/C compressor replaced, and many more problems after the first year. My wife would be...

Same EXACT thing is happening to me except with my Honda Odyssey van. I purchased my vehicle from them expecting to get a top of the line used vehicle and got the exact opposite.

Reported issues 7 days after purchase and was told they couldn't duplicate my complaints 15 months later my van was in the shop for weeks at a time off and on for months.

Now they want to offer me $6000 on a van I paid $14000 for less than 2 years ago. No way!

CARMAX...THE NATIONS LARGEST SLEAZY USED CAR DEALER..."this is there method of operation"

Everything they sell is bought at wholesale auto auctions, and most cars that end up at auto auctions are big dealership trade-ins that don't meet big dealership standards. The good stuff stays at big dealerships. The money they offer you for your trade-in is based on national auto auctions average price for your vehicle, minus anything they can drum up that's wrong with your car. They DO NOT USE BOOK VALUES to appraise your car. The vehicles they offer for sale are all priced 10% to 20% above any RETAIL BOOK VALUE that you can find for that vehicle. And they refuse to negotiate....they call it NO HAGGEL FAIR PRICE....what a lie! Paying more than the retail book value for any car is NOT a smart thing to do. You are up side down in the car the minute you sign the contract. Go online and check the NADA Book Value before you buy! Check the Car-Fax close on all the Vehicles they offer, many have been in accidents, they say they guarantee a clean title, but that only means it was not a total loss, not that it hasn't been in a big collision. Don't be fooled by there play on words.

Dont forget the hidden "Appraisal Cost Recovery" fee they've added to all appraisals. The MAX added this around 2010 and hits each appraisal offer for an additional 10-15% deduction in value.

The store has no control over it as it is automatically added when the buyer loads the appraisal into the system.

When you get your vehicle appraised, ask the sales consultant or buyer if this offer includes "ACR". The look on their face will be priceless.

CarMax low-balled me on value of my BMW.

They offered me $26,000 on a car with a Kelly Blue Book trade-in value of $30,000. Also, they drove the car without my knowledge. If I had known they were going to drive it, I would have gone with them. I felt totally "worked" at that place. They're just another used car lot. I said to them, "ARE YOU KIDDING ME" when they made their low-ball offer. The car is valued at $35,000 in the private market. Rip-off place. The car has 16,000 miles and not a scratch or ding on it. "Excellent condition," they said. Then they offered me a price they would have paid for a car with 75,000 miles on it. The man said they would take it to auction and that was all it was worth. For a 2012 with 16,000 miles on it? I don't think so.

So what did you sell your car for?

@Anonymous

I took it to Encinitas BMW and sold it to them for $30,000. This was after walking out the door after they made an initial offer of $27,000.

The employee actually came running out to the parking lot to make the subsequent offer.

I saw that they listed it for $34,000. I have no idea what it ultimately sold for....but someone got a cream puff of a car.

Carmax in Norcross, Georgia - Lowball Trade In Estimate

Went to carmax for the first time today. Wasted an hour waiting for carmax to evaluate the car. The car got a glowing review from carmax: well-maintained, no issues. And the offer was 25% below the Kelley BB trade-in value. This was for a 2008 Volvo S80 AWD T6, 6 year old vehicle, no issues, well-maintained, single owner: BB $10700 trade-in. Carmax offer: $8000. I saw a 2003 Honda Civic for sale on the lot: $10000!! It would cost me $2000 to trade in a 6 year old Volvo S80 for 12 year old Honda Civic. No thanks! It's hard to believe so many people are willing to be screwed by these guys. I will be staying away.

Working in the business for almost 20 years I can say 1. KBB has never written 1 check to purchase a vehicle as they are just an online ad agency who has never put their money where their mouth is.

2. Carmax although they are a competitor of mine gives very fair offers so much so that I often send my customers there to sell their trade and come back to buy my car(s). they are the LARGEST (Volume) appraisal and PURCHASER of used cars in the U.S. Fact.

Only uneducated in the car business that is customers rely on a Fictitious number from online companies like KBB. I believe that their should be more complaints on how misleading KBB is rather that other dealers like Carmax.

If KBB says your car is worth $10,700 - call them and tell them to buy your car.

Kelly Blue Book is an AVERAGE. Which anyone knows means some higher some LOWER..

Will Kelly Blue Book write you a check for your car?

Carmax offered you what it was worth to them.

Maybe Volvos don't sell well for them....

Maybe they already have many in stock.

It amazes me how people think KBB is gospel.....

KBB figures also include "trade allowance" which is how traditional dealers move money around in a deal if they think trade value is your "hot button" which for many (and clearly in your case) it is!!

And finally NO, I don't work for Carmax. They have many issues but not giving KBB for every car they appraise is not one of them.

Just got back from our local CarMax dealer in Harrisonburg, VA., where I went to look at a 2005 Toyota Rav4 sport model. I've spent the last three days doing my homework on what this car is worth considering age, mileage, packages, extras, etc. CarMax is selling this...

I had the same experience with Carmax. Why look at vehicles for a no hassle price when they are outrageously too high.

If you compare Carmax sticker prices to other dealer sticker prices, they are only a bit more affordable.

Funny thing is most people will talk a dealer down much more than Carmax has for a "hassle free" price. They will also get a much better trade in for their vehicle at another dealer.

The word "CarMax" stands for manipulating the deal to get Maximum profit on your Car. I bought a 2005 Toyota Sienna LE with 84,000 miles, two years ago for their "no-haggle" $12,500 price tag, plus paid $2,000 for an extended warranty as well as financing it through...

tom folliard, is it really neccessary for carmax management to get on it's employees if they forget their belt? I mean is it really that important to wear a belt to work to look presentable?

tom, do you realize how many employees you have that are doing what you want for free?

How can you include all the daily tasks a sales person has to do, and pay them commission? In my opinion, you are one greedy S.O.B.
