CarMax sells lemons
27 comments
Carmax sold us a car that had been in an accident when they told us it had not. They gave us a "car report" (that was not car fax) that said no accidents.
After a year of replacing headlights and getting alignments over and over we tried to trade the car in for a new car. That's when a reputable dealer told us about a prior accident. We could not trade it in. Carmax will not take the car back and we have to make payments on a piece of *** for 5 more years cause it is worth HALF of what we owe.
Can't sue 'cause it took us too long to figure it out.

Carmax sells unsafe vehicles. Technicians are honest to managers about what repairs are needed.
Managers who were fry cooks a week ago now make the decision as to whether a vehicle gets safety related repairs depending on cost per vehicle reports. If the numbers are too high they throw the dice and hope the customer does not return in 30 days. SAD SAD SAD company especially Naperville IL location.
Jacob Janowski is the service OPS manager and is clueless about cars just managing numbers on a report. Beware....
I was going to shop at carmax for a truck but after reading all these negative reviews , i think I will go somewhere else. The excuse that " You cant please everyone all the time," is a poor way to do business.
This is. Riminal in nature. My question to the CEO is, What happens if your dealership compromises the safety of drivers by indirectly selling vehicles with hidden problems that technicians miss that could cause accidents. Where is your conscience in these matters?
:? :?
I think this is a joke. Maybe the complainers should look in the mirror.
What do you expect when you buy a jeep grand cherokee. There all pieces of ***.
Buy a import from carmax not chrysler products. Plus I know carmax can sell cars with accidents but not frame damage.
CARMAX RALEIGH SELLS LEMONS ALSO AND THEY DON'T CARE WHO THEY HURT IN THE PROCESS. I HAD TOW CARS I HAD TO RETURN IN LESS THEN 5 DAYS AND GOT MY MONEY BACK ON THEIR RETURN POLICY.
CAR ONE SMELLED LIKE MOLD AND PETS.
CAR TWO HAD BORKEN GAS GAUGE THE CAR WAS ONLY 4YS OLD AND NEEDED FRONT END WORK AND MORE AND THEY SOLD ME THIS CAR. WHAT A JOKE CARMAX IS.
I bought a 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT, about a month and a half ago and they have had it in and out of their service shop a total of 38 days, and the problem is still not fixed, I tried working with them to trade the vehicle in, and they said I needed a rediculous down payment again, so they offered to buy back the vehicle but I had to pay $2700 for them to do that.
We've received your complaint and would like to looking into it. Will you give us a call at 800-519-**** anytime Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., EST.
I bought a 2005 Mecerdes Benz from car noticed some problems, took it and found out my MB had a recall and that my car had a problem for sometime. CArMax lies about the inspections.
also had the wrong license plates on the car. The right ones were in the trunk.
I called the sales person he told me to throw the license plates in the trash. NEVER AGAIN
My husband and I purchased a 2003 Toyota Tundra from Carmax in Turkey Creek just before Christmas. After we signed the papers and paid the downpayment, Carmax wrecked the truck in the parking lot while bringing it out of the car wash. They had the vehicle for 5 days while they fixed the dent and scrape on the side of the vehicle. They generously offered us two free oil changes for our trouble. After we picked it up, within two days the truck started leaking oil. We took it back... they said it was a leaky axle and would fix it. Again, they had the truck for days. While driving a loaner car, Carmax actually sold the loaner we had in use and made us bring back the vehicle we were driving. We picked up the truck after they "Fixed it" again. Within a couple days, it resumed leaking oil. They said they would replace the axle. We picked up the truck (again), and after a week and a half, the truck made a loud popping noise when it was shifted into drive. It also began to make a whirring sound when driven.
We had driven the vehicle for maybe two weeks total since Christmas and this weekend we took it back to Carmax and told them that we either wanted a different vehicle or every penny we spent back...
Carmax will not replace the vehicle or refund our money. They sold us a truck with a lot of problems.
I'm not sure how a truck like this made it through their "vigorous" inspections, But I would like to warn other drivers of Carmax's treatment of hard working, honest individuals.
Car max is a joke have had my car for foe years and have had for years of problems. One thing after another.
And their service department is full of uneducated mechanics.
Took my car to them over and over again and mysteriously the didn't realize my transmission was going out until after my warranty was over by 30 miles.. People save your self time and money by staying as far as you can from carmax :cry
I'm tying to start a class action against carmax, so I need everyone that's had *** fom Carmax to contact me at carmaxsucks at yahoo dot com.
If you are a lawyer willing to take the case, please contact me.

:( .... i've had nothing but trouble with Carmax.
I'm a single mother and just bought a Jeep Grand Cherokee 06 with 30,000 miles on it. yea the 125 point inspection my $%$#^%, 2 days after i had the car had to take it in for breaks!! I should have known to just give the car back. The car has since been their dealership 5 times.
recently my check engine light would come on, made 2 appointments and each time they told me they couldn't do anything b/c the light went off.... Well one morning my car just quits in the middle of the highway... the dashboard was light up with all kind of lights on. Had it towed to carmax...Carmax gets it and says its the power train module will have to send it to the jeep place...
The jeep place calls me and tells me that Carmax unplugged the ABS and when they plugged it back in, it made 17 other lights come on and they don't know what is wrong there is nothing they can do until the light comes back on.... I had to rent a car for the 3 days they had my car plus when i picked up my car i had to pay carmax "for looking" at my car b/c there was "nothing" wrong with it... i did buy the extended warranty however every time u bring your car in you have to pay $50. I would never buy another car with them.
I went and asked an employee for the Manager and started crying b/c i'm so furstated with them and that employee told me that i'm upsetting my child and the only thing they are going to do is tell me to get my car apprasied again and they can see how much they can give me for my car!!!! :sigh :(
you guys are a bunch of babies. new cars have problems also that is why there is a factory warranty on them.
carmax doesn't put miles on the car before they sell it to you and any car can have an unpredicted issue at any time. and the person with the mercedes, why don't you call mercedes dealer and find out for yourself why the part isn't there.
why don't you go buy a used car at another dealership and try talking to them when you have a problem with it. don't whine about carmax when you had to settle because you are too cheap to buy a new car.
I purchased a car from Carmax a year ago. Within a week, I had to go back and get an alignment.
A two weeks later, I had to go back and get another alignment (they admitted the mechanic did not properly do the alignment the first time I went). I year later, the power windows and door locks stopped working. I took it to get repairs-and was told by an independent mechanic the electric system is all jacked up, the wiring is coroded, and will require over $2000 in electrical repairs. I am waiting to hear if the warranty will cover it.
125 point inspection my ***.
I will never purchase a car from carmax again. I'd be happy to join a class action lawsuit.
Car had a serious leak, never disclosed. Extended warranty bought but not covered. Service department the worse in sanford florida.
the only reason that i could think that carmax is a fortune 500 best company to work for 4 years in a row is cuz they trick u into buying the cars and then dont want them back so ur stuck with the car either way and you owe more than what its worth.them not taking the car back is their way of saying we know its a lemon and we just *** u over and now u r stuck with it so have a nice day and thanks for getting ripped off at car(we will screw u over)max. 8)
Similar experience to others - the 125 point inspection is simply not performed. Purchased a 2008 Honda Civic with 11 thousand miles in March 2009.
Driver's side power window was off track and quickly repaired but I was forced to devote an early morning to the process. Front brakes required replacement at the 15 thousand mile mark.
Finally, the car was delivered with a slow leak in one tire which I did not catch until total failure. All in, I believe our buddies at carmax are a prime candidate for a class action law suit
Be careful with Carmax. I purchased a car from Carmax at Rivergate outside Nashville, TN in 2007.
I purchased a 2005 Monte Carlo SS.
May 2007, I got in a horrific car wreck where I was dead on scene. After 1.5 million in medical and what not plus life long suffering and learning how to live again. State-farm informs me the car had dummy airbags.Fast forward to 2009.Carmax is suing me for the remaining balance of the car, WTF. The insurance company did not pay the loan off due to the airbags and told me not to settle with them.
They want to go after my co-signer on the loan and to top it off the auctioned off the car against the insurance companies demands, including all my possessions in the car.
I called Carmax and asked where the car went and they would not tell me.So everything that I had in there the time of the accident is gone and they want to call me at 8am and threaten and harass me for the remaining balance of the car and my co-signer. I told them talk to my lawyer.
Don't sell the farm for Carfax either. They only list what has been given to them.
I bought a car from another dealership and was told the car had not been wrecked only to find out later it had been.
The accident was not on Carfax. You need to have a reputable mechanic check out a car.
Wow...lot of p*ssed people in here. I am about to purchase a Mustang from them and checked "auto check" not "carFax" on the title.
AutoCheck catches things that gets by "carFax". Hope my mustang isn't a lemon. My sis works at GMAC and checks out all vehicle reports, she even checked mine out. Its good.
So hope these reports don't give you a false sense of security. :?
I recently purchased a vehicle from CarMax and made the mistake of paying cash. Five months later and I still have not recieved my title.
The *** sent it to the wrong address and then had the nerve to tell me I'd have to take care of it myself.
I just want to fore warn any poor fool that is thinking about purchasing from CarMax. The minute they get your money you become persona non grata!!!!!
Buyers BEWARE!!!!!
