So heres the deal for working at CarMax. Don't apply unless you wish to be treated like trash, hate your job, yourself, and your pay.

I am a Sales Consultant at one of the CarMax locations and I have got to say it is the worst place to work. Not only do I hate it but 90% of the others I work with hate it.

First off, they have not given the sales consultants a pay raise ever since they first opened. They are paid $150 per car and an additional $100 for extended warranty. They give you an "imaginary" $7.75 per hour and multiply that by the number of hours worked per pay period(usually around 90 hours) and if you make more than that all you get is the commission. If you make less then they only give you the "imaginative" pay. I call it imaginative pay because on the next pay check they take the money back.

Also, they consistantly schedule us for around 50 hours per week. And that's right, NO overtime pay!

With the tough economy sales have gone down but Management always denies the economy is bad and blames the downward sales on us the consultants. We are blamed for bad sales trends and get written up for it.

Beware CarMax shareholders!! Management told us that you like incresed traffic and increased traffic through our internet office, and so what CarMax decided to do was route service and business office calls into the internet office to "skew" the numbers to make it look like increased sales calls. CarMax is a fraud!!!!

Location: Missouri City, Texas

Not true at all...carmax is a wonderful company that cares about their employees....u may be working for a messed up management team, but my location is amazing. Was only employee there less than a year and they help me with a death in my family...home office issued me 1500.

Check. Not to mention my coworkers that pulled together to help me....I will forever b grateful to my carmax family

In my opinion, any manager that blames the sales consultant for bad sales trends is a total fake. The managers must obey their superiors, and so on and so on.

The economy has totally tanked from what it use to be in the days when a ceo made 3 times more than the workers. Today, a ceo makes 300 times what a worker makes so guess where ALL THE MONEY GOES!! Carmax has the b@***l$ to write people up because they are not selling!!! That ceo should burn quicker than gasoline in ***!

Maybe sales people wouldnt get written up so much if the ceo got use to taking less vacations, or buying less toys. The more money the wealthy business interest makes, the more they take away from the employees.

It SHOULD BE THE OPPOSITE. I hope there comes a day when these greedy ceo's are kidnapped and punished for their behavior.

The Kompass surveys that carmax forces employees to do has to be the biggest laugh ever. Where is the logic in having a survey that does not allow the employees to give their own personal feedback?

This is the whole idea of a survey for God's sake! But I do understand why carmax does it their way, it's because they dont give a *** about what the employees really think. It doesn't matter to carmax, quit if you dont like it, right? Why try to IMPROVE a workplace?

carmax is a control type business, and they will never, ever change that.

So as an employee (sales consultant especially) why should you in return care about carmax? Just worry about yourselves and dont pay any attention to management.

May the people understand that they have the power to put any corporation into bankruptcy. I recommend to start here with carmax.

Quit whining. Funny how you're the only person posting multiple times per week.

Just quit the job and move on crybaby.

You think carmax is bad? Try working for radioshack (consistently the worst company to work for).

Look where they are today!

Capitalism, this is why corporations and companies can treat their employees like slaves. How can a ceo make millions of dollars and have more millions in stock, and workers for that company average $34k per year?

How come employees are treated like children and juvenile deliquents at carmax?

You gotta love what this nation has become since Reagan was elected president. This is the reason companies like carmax exist, and profit from poverty wages.

So as a sales consultant, you will play the most critical role in the entire operation at carmax. Your selling will make carmax tons of money ( as a group of consultants) but YOU will just average out your earnings.

Now that sounds like a good deal to me! If I dont mind locking up vehicles at night as a favor to carmax, or sit in the e-office for hours at a time not having the chance to make money with walk in customers, then I should not have any issues with making corporate and the CEO money, right?

Wrong!

A few years ago a carmax employee suggested to tom folliard to siphon gas from the wholesale vehicles carmax buys and transfers it to the tanks of their retail vehicles. Tens of thousands gallons of gasoline is sucked, and it saves carmax more than a half million dollars.

This sounds like a teenage prank or petty crime, but it's true and proves how shady carmax can be. Does this mean different grades of gas is going in Audi and BMW's?

carmax sucks! :p

Did the managers let anyone go home early "if you sold a car" today? The managers get paid a salary, plus a bonus if budget is made, and the consultant may make $0.00 today! Great policy tom!

Frankie S Ync

tom, money hungry parasite.

I do not think it's fair to have to work on Mother's/Father's Day. It's a FAMILY DAY FOR CHRIST SAKE!

If carmax wants to open, they should schedule those who volunteer to work, and not force anyone to work.

To all carmax corporate that are off today, I wish everyone a TERRIBLE MOTHER'S Day! You are all MOTHER'S in my book.

I am going to explain how carmax misleads new sales consultants soon after they finish training and start on the sales floor. I think most people will agree with me.

It all starts out after 4 weeks of training, and everything seems to be going ok when a sales consultant starts selling for a couple of months. Then your monthly file review comes, and the consultant has no idea at this point what lies ahead, and it's not pretty. After a couple of months, the new consultant will start to create numbers, like numbers of test drives, number of credit apps that are run, how many customers they had, how many cars sold and so on and so on. Well, if YOU DON'T MAKE YOUR MANAGER "HAPPY AS A CLAM" you better be prepared for an earful of how you basically under-performed and did not accomplish 10% of sales-to-customer ratio. Managers (not real managers) can get very frantic at these reviews, because you are not making BONUSES FOR THEM!

You see, it's all about them, not you, because it's not the consultants problem! The consultant may have sold for example say 8 cars for the month out of their 110 customers, and that's ok, but to managers and LGM's and corporate, that basically IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH! Let's face it, they have to get their paychecks, so you are expected to sell more, even if the economy sucks, or even if customers just want to sell their car, and not buy. My point is, EXPECT a rude awakening just when you thought carmax was going to be a "fun place to work"!

Don't be deceived in the begining, where you think it's just fine to sell under the 10% and nobody will say anything to you!

Once you see what it's like working there, chances are very good (turnover rate is off the charts) you will be gone, and posting on pissedconsumer! One more note, working 5 of 6 weekends ABSOLUTELY BITES!
