CarMax not worth it

I have excellent credit and was looking for a small inexpensive car for my daughter as a first time vehicle. I figured carmax was the place. Because it was going to be my daughter's car, I couldn't buy it in my name. As a first time buyer, my daughter was going to be charged 24% interest on a $21,000 car--that's adding an extra $20K to the price over 6 years of payments. There was no way! I went to a new car dealer and bought a brand new car with 0% interest and still cheaper!

carmax makes money in every aspect of a deal. Why give a dealer business when the customer is getting ripped in every way? Is it true that service gets a commission for finding something wrong with a customers vehicle?

Guest

Carmax makes money on they buy rates from the banks . Its not unheard of of a co-signer getting their kids low rates go to credit union NEVER PPL USE CARMAX FINANCE PRODUCTS they are way over priced rates are jacked up !

for every rate they get 4 points or a flate plus a buy rate .

BEWARE of the *** cars they sell . SERIVCE is not a place I would bring my worst eneimes car

I dont know carmax corporate boy, why do YOU like to lie? Just kidding.

I know its to make a paycheck. Anyway this chick isnt an author. Read between the lines.

She got insulted by the carappy carmax offer & cosigned for a much better one at a dealer. No doubt a better warranty too.

Guest

Your daughter DID NOT get approved at a new dealership with 0% interest with her being a first time buyer. don't lie.

hahahahaha! "Because it was going to be my daughter's car, I couldn't buy it in my name."... lie again.. why not?!

If you know anything about finance and loans at all, you can pay off the loan at anytime you're not obligated to keep it for 6 years. but i am not sure why you couldn't cosign it for her and have the interest reduced to 3-6% since you have excellent credit. People like to lie not sure why

Paid to have car transferred in and they never called to tell me the car was in.

Carmax gladly charged my credit card to have a car transferred in to the local Carmax dealership. They told me I would wait possibly 7 days until the car would arrive. I waited 14 and never recieved a call. I had to call them. Then I was told they were waiting on a part to fix the car. It had arrived 7 days before my phone call and nobody had taken the time to call me with an update. Now they won't return my transfer fee and I have no intention of doing any business with Carmax or buying a car that arrived 14 days ago damaged or broken(I have no idea which one). How do they consider themselves a reputable business?

CARMAX ARE RETARDED

I bought and paid for my car (took 3-1/2 hours!), I get out to drive it away (test drove it again earlier) and the sunvisor on the passenger side was hanging loose where someone had broken it! I've been back every day in the past week since I bought it and there is always some reason why they can't fix it and want me to leave my car. "We're booked" "have to order it"...you name it. I've never been so angry on a daily basis. DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH CARMAX!!!!!!!!! ...if you want to keep your blood pressure down, that is.

The sunvisor should not have been broken to BEGIN WITH! Are you serious?

Fix it BEFORE it goes on the lot!! HELLO BING BONG

Johnny J Zaf

omg is carmax corporate. He is creating raving carmax fans.

Guest

No, they DID NOT give higher priority to cars with more damage than a passenger sunvisor!!! You are kidding me!

And did they really expect you to leave your car with them so they can fix it as opposed to having you simply wait in the car while they do it? OMG. Stop! Oh and here's the kicker: they have to order the sunvisor too?

OMG: why didn't they have a TON of those laying around somewhere for you to come back daily and get one when it needed find that floppy sunvisor when you test drove it to see how the car runs?? Yes they, and not you, are totally ridiculous!

Carmax Oak Lawn Il, Unreliable service, incompetent.

Took my Jeep Cherokee Laredo in for service to Oak Lawn Carmax in Illinois. for a hood Traction bar repair and to check to see why the speed decrease while driving. There was a $50 deductable for traction bar and a $100 deductable for the checking of the decrease of speed, totaling $151.

My problem is my vehicle was there for 7-8 days and all the tech managers kept calling me wth no clue on what they were looking for with the speed issue and said they dont see a problem, so after a week I agreed for Carmax to send it to a Dealership to check for problem, and their conclusion was a rear different tread tire was the cause. While I disagreed I just needed my car , so i paid for the $151. As I left the lot to a gas station on the next block the seat belt light came on, I drove home because I wanted to talk to the manager Dave Nidbit directly who were gone for the day, the next morning I called CarMax dave Nidbit and Edwin , both who said its not there issue and it would require another $50 diag charge , I disagreed because the light didnt satrt coming on till i received the car back from them.

Maybe a oversize person did something with my seat belt Dave Nidbit was oversized , it could have been him. So im forced to pay a deductable to someone else which I expect Carmax to cover and if repairs that warranty doesnt cover Carmax Oaklawn is responsible.

Inability to deliver a descent car ... period!

Seeing a car online in OK City,OK my son had it brought to the Garland Carmax. They said it had a problem that a tech was looking at because it wouldn't talk to the state computer for inspection purposes. They farmed it out to the local GMC dealer. Keep in mind this is an '09 Aveo. The computer was replaced and then the key switch. After it still was not right they declared that it was going to the salvage pool. Second car was brought in from Austin and it had been wrecked, fixed and repainted. They didn't even clear the back bumper. It was dull. There were several spots where they did some spot touch-up paint and it wasn't even the same color. Paint in the engine bay was a different color than the car. The trans dipstick showed brown fluid instead of red and the motor appeared to have some sludge in it. I told "Cam" this and he tooted the 5 day return policy and the first 30 days repairs were on them. My son elected to not buy the car and the salesman wasn't happy. The biggest thing I have learned in dealing with these ingrates is that if you know what you are talking about then they have no way to deal with you. They don't know how. I am over 35 years under the hood and do know what I am doing with most any car. I can't in clear conscience buy another car from them. It's the biggest crackhead establishment I have ever seen. After this I went to one of the local Chevy dealers and picked out a nice used car and went home happy. It was seamless and easy. Carmax could take a lesson from almost ANY used car lot in America and be able to improve their act. They won't do it.

COMPLETE RIP OFF!!!!!

I brought my luxury vehicle to CarMax to sell, it is in perfect condition inside and out with low mileage. I'm a nonsmoker, original owner and THE CAR HAS NEVER BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT. Kelly Blue Book on my car was $20,000. CarMax couldn't find any issues with the vehicle so they lied and said the car had frame damage!!! They offered $11,000. WHAT AN INSULT!!! NEVER SELL YOUR CAR TO THESE THIEVES!!!! Their inspector will look for ANYTHING to low ball you on the value even if what they say is wrong with your car is a lie. You should never sell or buy from these *@$#&*!.

Absolutely, carmax tries to lower your expectation before your offer by looking at the dents and dings and make you feel like your vehicle is really used! You can see dollar signs in all thier eyes when a customer walks in! Don't walk in, and you will be ok.

Go sell your car to KBB or NADA. Oh right, they don't buy cars. Your car is worth what someone will pay you for it, find a better buyer!

CARMAX had us wait 5 HOURS to tell us....

Last Saturday, my husband and I went to Carmax in RoundRock, TX to purchase a car....Let me tell you how horrible our expierence was and how we now know what EVERYONE is saying about them..If you like a car their DO NOT BUY!!! well becasue YOU CAN'T!!!...

Here's my story... We go to carmax, pick a car, get approved, and then we wait....wait.....wait..... 5 HOURS later, broken evening plans, after singning my current car's title over, after signing ALL of the paperwork, they had already taken my car plates off my car I was trading in, ripped of my state inspection, ran my gas all they way down,... they dont even offer us water as Im trying to find a $1.30 to buy some from the snack machine...

we are starving by this time...then something weird starts to come to our attention. Our sales dude Kevin, starts looking frantic and keeps passing us but will not look at us.... Sales managers are looking all around the office. there is only 15 minutes before closing...

Kevin walks up to us and says " I hate to be the bearer of bad news..." My husband and I are thinking.." what?..we will need to come back in the morning to wrap this up...?" He replies, " We can't sell you the car, we can't find the title..and it will take 30 days to get a new one."... we were PISSED!!! and rightfully so... He didnt even say sorry...

NO ONE did... we had wasted our time, broken plans, they tore off my state sticker ($75 bucks).. ran my gas ALL the way down becasue they kept it running while they were "checking it out".. made us pay to get a copy of my car title for thier records on my trade in..and they didnt even offer us A gift card not even $10 bucks for our time, for all The $h*t they put us through.....

I have and will LET everyone know about Carmax... o h yeah and the next Saturday we went and bought from Champion cheverolet in NW Austin and it was PAINLESS!!! we got an awesome new G-ride and 3 point sless on our APR rate...

Carmax said the best they could do was 8.5 % and Champoion got us 5%..... Mark my words you WILL be sorry when you go and even more pissed when you find out it is a lemon..".Just sayin..."

I'm sorry but I work at CARMAX, and that seems a bit off. We usually are state inspection stations so we normally would have replaced .

We have gas pumps on site to fill cars we sell , and we reimburse customers at all times for EVERYTHING.

We always give ice water, and I personally give change to my customers who I'm selling to. I can't imagine any GM not coming up to you personally to explain, and or put you in a a loaner , we are built on integrity and customer service and satisfaction.

My experience at Car Max store located in Chattanooga Tn. was a sucky one.

First i made four trips to this store for various reasons and was stuck with four different saleman and not a one had a clue of what they were doing or how to sell a car.One visit was to have my vehicle appraised they offered me 500.00 WTF i posted it on craigslist and sold it for 2,200.00 three days later. Next visit was to look at a truck that was listed on the website and after spending an hour of my time they inform me the truck was gone and it was all ready gone when i called and set up the appointment.I than found a truck i liked located in Nashville Tn. but before taking the next step and transferring the truck i filled out the online credit application and "Congradulations Shawn you are approved".On to the next step getting truck to Chattanooga three days later i was contacted by one of the many salesman that blew smoke up my ***!!.Next visit to see the truck and take for a drive yes i did like the truck and went home to think about my decision the next day another trip to Car Max and yes another salesman to purchase this fine truck. With the down payment in cash in my pocket we sat down in front of his computer to start the paperwork and to my surprise none of the figures in front of me accept the crazy *** interest rate they want was correct.

They had my down payment nearly a 1,000.00 more than i had agreed to even with the higher down payment my monthly payment was nearly 50.00 more a month than the ONLINE APPROVAL quoted. At this point i was done and my salesman knew it.

At this point the sales manager comes over to assist him and after looking at their numbers and my numbers she informs me that "yes there is a glitch in the online credit site and that their I.T. people are aware of it and are trying to fix it" do you think after several trips to the Car Max dealership that one of those incompitent salesman knowing i did the "Online credit" would mention the fact they have had problems like this and get that part clear and out of the way first. My opinion of Car Max is a pretty place that has a lot of smoke and mirrors and sales people that cant get hired at Wal-Mart.

i WILL NEVER EVER BUY A CAR FROM SUCH A RIP OFF "PRETTY" COMPANY! THEY ARE THE WORST!

CarMax does not allow the stores to do things to take care of customers anymore. There is a policy for everything and if your situation does not fall within their policies they do nothing.

They will not look at you or apologize because they don’t know what to do. The days of hiring managers to make decisions and run a business are gone. The managers today are past Target and Home Depot Managers.

Think about the customer service needed to spend $25 compared to that needed when spending $25,000. There are few real managers left at CarMax and those that are still there are being castrated by corporate.

They also lie about giving you a fair amount on your trade in. I was trying to sell my truck.

We to them first. They only wanted to give me $5000.

Then took my truck to Capitol Chevy, they ended up giving me $6500 for it. Screw CarMax!

Twenty one Point Inspection

Please give me break with Carmax. Me and my girlfriend stood and watch their twenty-one point inspection through the glass windows ,so I guess if you call opening all four doors and the hood, turning the key on and walking around it once. That's a CARMAX Twenty One Point Inspection. Low Bids is right. When you have a 2011 GMC Sierra 4x4 7200 miles Fully Loaded and they offer $31,000.00 that's a slap in the face. Thank But No Thanks. What a Joke . I went there to just get an appraisal. Not sell them my truck. It has a lot of extras and he told me it counted against it. And the parts were factory. They missed my truck by $5k probably because they can't comprehend Black Book or understand their LOCAL market. I sold my 4x4 Chevy truck to a franchised new car dealer and it was resold 2 weeks later.

Cash trade no difference for an over allowance we are talking NET. Wasn't even a Chevy store. Want a CarMax like experience?

Just go pay full price retail at any dealer if you don't want to negotiate, it'll be just like you're at CarMax. Simple

Guest

What some of these corporate boys don't uderstan is,that if their going to state on TV that they give you a 21 point inspection then that's what you sould get. If their given you cosmetic inspection.

Then they should tell you it's gust an estimate. I would'nt mine paying for the real thing. In fact I thought I would have to pay for the inspection.

That would'nt been a problem. Get their advertisement right.

Guest

It sounds like you watched the cosmetic inspection, the 21 pt inspection is done mostly on the road by a certified mechanic. As a former employee I have done both cosmetic and the 21pt inspection the cosmetic is walking around the car then looking at the interior, when you do it to about 20 cars a day you can spot a dent on a car driving 60 on the highway. I understand the price may be nuts but get your facts straight before making judgement

Guest

Of course it sounds like a deal to you, corporate boy.

Guest

You were expecting retail? 31k for a used truck. Sounds like a deal to me.

Carmax....Front bumper peeling for the 2nd time

I took my 06 Liberty in today 6-25-12 to Carmax. My front bumper started peeling for the 2nd time. Because it's been 15 months since they repainted the bumper, they won't honor their work. It's totally obvious that it's peeling, cause of a *** paint job. They picked on it, so now it even looks worse. Offered to paint it for $200. Now why would I want to give them any money???? They should stand behind their repairs. The car has been garaged since I bought it. It's in fantastic shape. I could understand if it was my fault that the paint is peeling, but it's NOT...... A painting job done right, wouldn't peel in 15 mo. The back bumper was painted bad also. They took care of that. No peeling on the back bumper. I want my bumper repainted by Carmax...... I will never be a customer of theirs again.

CARMAX VA - RIP OFF

DO NOT SELL YOUR CAR TO THESE PEOPLE - THEY ARE TRYING TO RIP YOU OFF (I work in finance, trust me, I know!!) So, I drove 3 hours to sell my 2006 Honda Civic SI - FULLY loaded, with GPS system and everything! I saw they were selling one similar to mine (without GPS system and several other features) for $17,998 in the same state where I live. As that is the same value I found at Kelly Blue Book, I figured somewhere around $16,000 would be a fair price for my car. Carmax could make $2,000 for doing a little bit of nothing - OK by me. But nooooo... THEY OFFERED ME $12,500. That's only 70% of the Blue Book Value, and a profit to them/loss to me of $5,500! The man that inspected my car told me how nice and clean it was - and what a beautiful car I have, and trust me, it's a very nice, well kept car!! ***$12,500*** ARE THEY SMOKING CRACK?? Never do business with this place - they are crooks!! Run away... as fast as you can!

Really... If I'm so ignorant, why did I sell the car just 3 weeks later for just a little under $16k? I had my car evaluated by a third party BEFORE listing it, and THEY rated it as a 97/100 - not me!! I knew *** well my car was a gem, and so did CARMAX!

Somehow you are trying to convenience me that just because a company is traded on the NYSE that they are NOT CROOKS?? Wasn't Enron traded too? And I think the biggest crooks on this planet (after CARMAX) IS THE NYSE!! Every heard of a little movement called "Occupy Wall Street". Your statement is by no means a valid measure to my claim.

My validity comes from knowing what I was offered, and what I was able to sell it for myself.

In the future, if you WORK FOR CARMAX, please do not post your lies trying to discredit me!! I will embarrass you every single time!

Guest

Locane, you work in finance, but you don't know anything about finance... maybe time to reassess your career??

When a company or dealership is to buy your car, they have to put into consideration that they're going to spend quite abit of money to fix up your car to bring it to marketing condition to sell your car. they have to put money into advertising and pay people to sell your car? what about to keep the lights and ac on at the dealership?

What about the mileage on the car? 2006 is 6 years old you figure you lose about $1500 each year you had the car. a brand new one is about $22000. What about the demand? who really wants a sporty small coupe nowadays when everyone is trending on hybrid and conservative?

Moreover, if you don't like the offer don't take it, but i'm sure that no other place is giving you that price for the car and you ended up taking the deal anyways.... don't think your car is diamond when it's realy just a piece of junk. get real, if they're crooks they wouldn't be trading on the NYSE.

ignorant...

Carmax

my husband went online to make a car payment and the web site was temporarily down. the payment did not take, so the site said "incomplete"

He waited a few minutes and went back in to make a payment and this time received a conformation #, however CarMax took 2 payments out of our account and has caused other checks to utility bills to be returned NSF.

He called the company and was very business like, requesting that they refund our money from the first payment and gave them the details of the payment. The person on the phone was very cordial and said that if we faxed the information they would credit us.

The next day, no credit was received and I asked my husband to call again and speak to a manager who frankly told him that they didnt' care if we only wanted to make one payment and that the overdrafts were not their fault. he said that it would take up to 7 business days to credit our account back.

In the mean time we have had a hard time and it's costing us double what the payment would have been. We will never deal with Car Max again. They do not care about the welfare of their customers and the money is earning interest while we are hurting on this end.

If we can get a loan elsewhere, we will and not look back. I am so upset that they have stung us. They should have had the courtesy to call and ask if we meant to make 2 payments and......couldn't they tell on the other end that a confirmation was not given on the first payment??? and that it was NOT affirmed???

Financing goes through outside lenders like BoA, Wells Fargo, etc.

How did Carmax have anything to do with your payment issues? When I went to buy a car with them, I felt I would get a better rate with my local credit union and my salesperson even helped me through the process of doing so.

It was pretty clear that, unlike other dealerships, Carmax didn't have any ties to their national lenders at all.

Carmax, Cincinnati Ohio, just plain ignorant.

I began a week ago, calling Rex at this location discussing car financing, letting him know that if there was no ability for me to get financing, that he should let me know that over the phone. When I got there (it was a week later because I work 10 hour days and couldn't make it there any sooner.) although I did not expect to meet Rex, he told me I would be meeting with a woman named Donna, he didn't work on Sunday's. Well, Donna was on vacation, so I had to meet with anyone who was available, who happened to be a dealer named Kevin. Kevin was just finishing a previous applicant, so the manager came over, and I asked him about the car that Rex had brought up from another location for me. He stated he would go see the price, and began to walk towards the lot. Another family was standing near a car in the showroom, and he stopped to speak to them, asking had they been helped, and although they stated they had, he remained speaking to them, leaving me standing waiting so I walked back over to the friend who had come out with me. It took another sales person who noticed our frustration to walk over and offer to assist the family for him to even remember I existed, and continue with me following to go see the car. I did not like the car, it was smaller than I had originally expected and not even what I discussed with Rex over the phone not once but multiple times. When the dealer finally was done, he came out for the test drive. The first car, we took to the highway, and when we got it past 50 it began to have trouble. So, we went back to the lot and pulled another one (the one I originally wanted in the first place.) and it rode better, so we began the paperwork. After finishing everything even down to buying insurance for the vehicle (this would have been my first financed car I have never done so before.) He stated he would just have to have his manager sign off. (yep, you got it the man who started my horrible experience.) The manager sits me down and tells me he has to change some details because what I was originally quoted was wrong, and after he did this, the financing for the car dropped off and I was no longer approved. He stated he would see if he could work something out, while the financing was getting checked on, and again he walked onto the floor and began helping another person. (Kevin believed he was doing his best to call something in and see what he could do, which he was definitely not.) He sat back down, told me he didn't think anything he could do (not even recommending I may put down more of a down payment as some had even suggested.) He just simply seemed not to find me qualifying of him taking the time to sell me a car. This took my whole day off, a total of over 5 hours. This experience was ignorant, hurtful, and fully unnecessary.

Beware: you'll get screwed on CarMax Purchase of your car

Purchased 2009 Smart fortwo Passion from Potomac Mills, Virginia CarMax in Mar 2011. Had 7,000 miles at the time. Sold it back to same CarMax in Aug 2012 with 25,400 miles. They paid me $8000. A few days later I saw it for sale on their website for $12,998!!!!! A profit of nearly $5000!!! To save you the math, this is a 60% profit!!!!

There are veeeeery few legitimate businesses, particularly in these economic times that gets a 60% profit.

I called and complained and got an earful of "corporate speak"..."we have to send all cars thru reconditioning process, winter is around corner and prospective buyers will worry about how it does in snow, yadda, yadda, yadda." Bottom line: nothing, nada, zippo. I have purchased several cars thru CarMax because I felt that they were treating me fairly....NO MORE!!!

Which ever way you look at it, it's a used car business! There is one way to explain it and its a shady business. The 5 day money back is a joke, its a way to make people feel better at the time of purchase.

Johnny J Zaf

You are carmax corporate.

I suppose that its a coincidence that you and 5 other people in stone mountain GA posted on the same day minutes apart all defending carmax on the most recent posts. Seriously how *** do you think we are?

Guest

I agree with Steve and Bill and I do not work for any car dealership. I simply came on here as a prospective buyer to see legitimate complaints but am shocked at why people are complaining.

So you went back to Carmax and they resold your car for more. Makes sense to me. If you wanted more money, why didn't you either asked for what you wanted, not sold it to them, sold it yourself, or sold it to another dealer. Really consider the reason they sold it for more and really consider whether they got all that profit: more work and customizing had to be done.

Were you willing to put in the work, time, energy, and money to get the car to "re-sale to customer" ready? Dealers will take junk and make it more appealing. Often we customers won't do the needed work to make our cars more appealing to dealers to want to buy it at higher prices. We understand that with re-selling houses so I imagine it's no less different with reselling cars.

Do you know how much it costs to do the kind of work they did to the car?

And unless you inspected the car inside and out, you really can't say if they profited too much from buying the car from you. Chalk it up as a lesson learned.

Bill? Steve?

Is this what your manager is telling you to do? Discredit & insult everyone that posts on here? You're not going to make customers fall in love with carmax that way. But everyday you create raving carmax fans.

Just not the kind you want.

Your guilty of the same things Carmax sells every piece of junk on their lots & charge for them as diamonds. And believe me they are JUNK!

Screwed,

Were you happy with the $8k at the time of sale? My guess is yes! Move on to your next purchase or do your homework next time you sell a car!

Economic times has nothing to do with the equation of how much this company should list the car. You being a shopper at carmax many times, how do you think the company pays for the lease for the building?

employees? what about money to fix the car before putting it back on the lot? You're bitter because the company paid you money and reselling the car? What would make you happy?

Them giving you $8k for the car and then re-list it for $7k?

Why don't they just go out of business then? People are ignorant and they think their cars are worth diamonds when they're junk, you shouldn't have taken the money then, i bet you already sent that 8k probably

Greenville, SC Carmax

I purchased my current vehicle at Carmax in Greenville, SC in 2009. That was a very pleasant experience. I've been looking for the last 8 months at trading and I've put in many hours searching Carmax for the vehicle I wanted. Finally I found it, so I called the Greenville store and spoke to Trey to set up an appraisal. The next day I showed up about 15 minutes before my appointment and asked for Trey, they said they'd find him. When Trey came to meet me he explained he had two additional appointments at the same time as mine so he was passing me off to another salesman, named David. I had to go through the whole story with David as to what I wanted to do. We took the sign out of my vehicle to indicate it was there to be appraised. Then we went back to David's office and waited. In the meantime we looked my vehicle up on KBB to see what my vehicle is worth. I had already done this numerous times and knew what it was worth. KBB had my vehicle valuated at $16K as "fair condition" and $22K as "excellent condition". Finally when the appraisal was available to view on the computer, David and I went through it together. Every thing was listed as "good condition" and the appraiser named Darwin valuated my vehicle as &16K which by Carmax standards was "fair condition". David even said "there must be something wrong, I'll be right back". David came back in about 15 seconds to say "what it is, is what it is, take it or leave it". I said no way and I'm outa here. I got up got my keys and proceeded to my vehicle. When I got in, the smell was horrible, so bad that I had to let down all my windows. Darwin had *** in my vehicle! Yes ***! I talked to the sales manager named Cody. He really didn't seem interested in my complaint. These people are losers and I recommend not going to the Greenville SC store.

There are many negative posts about carmax. I see the positive comments are from those who work for carmax.

I would encourage potential car buyers to keep the vehicle you already have. Car payments can be for many years and higher interest will mean you pay much more than the sticker price!
