I recently started working for CarMax in Southern California and now I'm beginning to question if there really are any legit dealerships anywhere in the USA..

I was a mechanic before but i never told them that. As part of Sales Training you have to do rotations in each department and spend time in the cars of each category and class looking for function and placement so when you present a car to a customer you aren't fumbling around. So as I'm doing this activity I'm noticing leaks, manifold issues, catalytic converter issues and tire issues not to mention that most of the cars are poorly detailed and some downright dirty.

Some of the cars they buy are actually good which are the one owner, rarely driven, well taken care of kind. I've also seen people who bring in their Parent or Grandparents car that was also rarely driven and well taken care of. I suggest you buy these kind of cars from CarMax or any used dealer. Its all in the Vehicle History Report and better yet bring your own mechanic with you when shopping for any used vehicle.

I also think their MaxCare is mostly *** because their service center is a joke. Their service center is manned by mostly cheap labor that they work in 24 hour shifts. CarMax is a billion dollar company they can afford to put better quality products in their cars and get better mechanics but they don't.

Lastly proceed with caution with any used dealership. CarMax does buy some cars that have been in accidents and they will tell you that. Carmax isn't a bad dealership just greedy. They could pay a better hourly rate to their employees and better comission to their sales persons. Their mechanics only make $16 hourly and Sales Persons only make $150 per deal they close. Not only that but the employees only get a $300 discount for buying a car from CarMax. You'd think they would give a better discount and give the employees service and detail privileges at least once a month but they don't they have to pay out of pocket. Yet I've seen the bosses spend $400 on pizza that no one wanted.

I probably won't be staying with CarMax there's too much red tape and too cliquish it's like the Hispanics against the Americans.

Reason of review: Bad quality.

Location: Santa Ana, California
