Carmax is extremely unethical in their business practices and treatment of employees. You may be blackballed if you quit and management doesn't care for you. I found out my prior manager has been giving me bad references despite me receiving a performance recognition while employeed with them.

I worked at Carmax for an extended amount of time and had excellent voc scores and never received any type of coaching because I did my job to a T. However, I was constantly told I didn't smile enough or seem approachable enough despite customers giving me good reviews.

This was mainly because if you work for Carmax the culture is very close-minded and dishonest. I did not gossip with coworkers and as an introvert I was not constantly kissing up but always polite/respectful. I did not undestsnd why so many managers wanted to delve into my personal life to the point of intrusion. I found this upsetting and a way they fish for reasons not to like you or get some type of dirt on you. Maybe they're just nosey, but very off-putting for any work culture.

The problems I had were the lies told to customers and almost being forced to stay off the clock ILLEGAL. Please do not take the risk with them they only care about SALES if sales managers don't make budget they don't get paid which is ridiculous but it forces them to push through sales that will fall through or push customers with bad credit into one of their shady Lein holders and they even fudge the paperwork sometimes for Lein approval. They also get kickbacks the higher your interest rate. Seen it with my own eyes.

They sometimes add warranties to elderly or foreign customers purchase because they know they can get away with it.

My manager was so lazy when the office was swamped she still wouldn't see customers. She would also expect those who closed to clock out and then wait until she was ready to leave before they could leave. I would leave anyways seeing how I do NOT work for free and I suppose this is the reason for bad references my current employer told me about.

The are a true good ol' boys club. I noticed some of the minorities I worked with were held to higher standards when seeking advancement and gas lighted on many occasions. I felt sorry for some of my coworkers dealing with such manipulative tactics to keep Certain people out of management. The lead on a lot of ppl and play games O haven't even seen in "real" corporate offices.

The pay is low but I didn't mind as I had no intentions of moving up and had another job as well.

Their open door policy is non-existent and I've watched them gang up on employees for small slights due to personal biases or whatever whimsical reasons. They seem to have a problem if you don't participate in the culture even if you do your job well and are respectful.

I will say I do not think the company will do well in years to come. They don't promote good people for management but those who fit a certain type. This causes them to loose out of quality and they're already slipping in sales despite opening new stores( shareholder driven)

The technicians lie about repairs so s lot of cars are sold needing repair knowingly and unknowingly.

Their service department doesn't do work as promised and will return your vehicle in worse shape sometimes.

I've seen quite a bit and couldn't stand having my conscience ate up at night from some their policies and dishonesty to customers, especially the elderly.

I do not recommend them for employment or vehicle purchase. Patronize at your own risk this is a warning.

THE MANAGER (LEADER) DECIDES WHAT GETS FIXED AND WHAT DOESN'T! AND THEY GET BONUSES!

THIS COMPANY SHOULD BE SUED BIG-TIME. CURRENT EMPLOYEES WILL HELP BRING DOWN CARMAX.

I'm a.production tech at CARMAX. And although I agree with most of what you have to say, I disagree with your comment about techs not fixing known issues.

We write up every single issue that we can find, but after it gets wrote up, the manager (that has no automotive training at all or experience ) will go through your ticket to cancel and decide what needs fixed and what doesn't.

They get bonuses for keeping cost per car low. And no matter what gets wrote up and then canceled, if it comes back within 30 days, it gets blamed on the tech-not the manager that canceled the repair that you told them needed fixed in the first place.

If this is the case, then the tech should make copies of the original tickets before submitting to the management for future references if the blame falls on the tech.

"Unethical" is really a good choice of words to describe this company. Maybe the ceo really doesn't know that these go on at carmax.

I just cant understand why it continues to happen.

It may possibly be because carmax is too big and cant find quality leadership.
