i the most horrible experience with carmax over the past 3wks. I went to carmax in effort to sell my car. They took over an hour and gave me an appraisal of $22,500 on a brand new 08 fully loaded nissan altima MSRP $25,300. I thought it was an ok deal but needed to weigh out my options first. A serious family emergency took place and I took the car in the day after it experied on the 8th day. They attempted to appraise the car again and only had a difference of a 150 miles since i was last in there. The Rep came out and instead of giving me the appraisal figure they went on and on about manheim auto auction, this and that and showed me a car auction book. I said what is the problem with giving me the appraisal figure? After about 20minutes he said i am sorry they made a mistake its only worth $21k. It didnt go down much. I am sorry $1500 is quite a bit for me. I spent 3 long hours waiting because they claimed the previous guy assumed it was a 6cyl. LIARS. I was extremely upset so I called the manager the next day. I was very upset and he refused to listen and I completely wasted my time. He pretty much told me I was stupid. So this last time around since I have had a hard time selling the vehicle in a slow environment, I attempted 1 more time since I was in a jam and dont have time to wait to sell the vehicle. I let exactly 21 days go by. I went in last night and got another appraisal. The manager came out and said oh i was just being nice the last time and you don't even deserve this figure... he gave me $20k. I work in the auto business and was like wow...... its a nissan altima the car is #2 in the us for auto sales and it hasnt had many recent miles on it and nothing has changed. How does a car go from $25,200 to $21k, to $20k over 3wks when the market was the same 3wks ago? He proceeded to say i was lucky he was giving me that and was insanely rude!! Instead of saying thanks or anything he got up and walked away. The San Diego store is horrible! I am not the only one who has complained about this. If it was not for the passing of my grandmother i would keep the car.... do not shop at carmax they are only out for themselves. My friends bought a car there and got screwed as well. If you know whats good for you, shop auto trader, craigslist, you name to save money, time and bad customer service. They claim they buy any car, but again an import car with little miles on it does not depriciate $2500 in 3wks. Please... i used to work at the auction. Guys if you need a nissan, go to Pacific Nissan i had the greatest experience in my life there. I will never attempt to buy or sell a car to Carmax again. They are full of CRAP!
Carmax ***. They claim to be better than other dealerships, but it is nothing but slick advertising. Who wants to go in and pay full sticker price? You can go into any dealership and do that. Any dealership is going to gladly accept full sticker price, because only suckers would do that!
Here's me beef about Carmax, they only offer peanuts for decent used cars, then mark them up astronomically once they are on their lots. For instance, the offered me $1,400 (yes, fourteen hundred...) for my 2002 Hyundai Accent, yet had the EXACT same car on their lot for $7,998. Yes, I expect them to mark up their cars some after buying them from individuals, because they have to pay their employees, taxes, insurance, electricity, advertising, etc, etc, the same as any brick-and-mortar business does - but low-balling the individuals that are the source of their "inventory" is unacceptable. They need to be fair and offer decent compensation, which they are not doing.
The whole depreciate 15% thing when you take it off the lot is a bunch of Bullshit.
I Sell at Pompano Honda "In lovely Pompano Beach Florida" our depreciation value is 3.3% off the lot, any dealership who does anymore is a criminal and should lose their state license to conduct business.
Consumers don't let people scare you on depreciation values, Granted you will never be able to sell a vechile for what you paid for it, unless its a Collectors Item.
A quick word on Shaner497's comments on 4/23. It never ceases to amaze me how gullible people are, and how uninformed they are when it comes to buying a car. There are many, many people out there who actually believe you can finance a car with 0% APR. And there are people out there who actually believe that BMW offers their "Ultimate Service" program for free.
Here's a hint Shaner497... when you drive off in a brand new car it instantly depreciates (that means loses value) an average of 15%. Based on the MSRP of $25,300, which apparently you paid, your precious, fully loaded, Nissan Altima dropped almost $3,800 the second you drove it off the dealer's lot. By the time you got home and were pulling into your driveway you were driving a USED car. By the time you read this message it will have depreciated even further. Please take the time to educate yourself about the pitfalls of buying a new car and stop whining.
Take a look at the complaint from Tony on 4/24. This guy doesn't even know how to spell or put a correct sentence together. I'm not surprised he only worked for a short time at CarMax. CarMax doesn't tolerate uneducated people on their staff. I'm amazed he got into the Air Force (scary!). CarMax is the largest retailer of used cars in the country. You can't please all of the people all of the time, but CarMax, which started in 1993, is one of Fortune 100's "Best Companies to Work For" for four years in a row, and one of their "Most Admired Companies." They certainly didn't get to where they are today by hiring people like Tony.
I worked a bit at Car Max part time while I lived in Albuquerque, NM. I was in the Air Force and I wanted a part time job. I used to sell cars for a few years before I went into the Military and I was used to the " Proffessional Dealerships." However, when I first walked into CarMax I saw a huge difference. They are a retail store with a bunch of crooks that had no idea on how to sell a vehicle. I was embarressed to be even associated with a bunch retailers that claimed they were car people. They actually believe they are a " Cut Above Dealership." The only good thing about them is if you don't like haggling you can purchase a vehicle right a sticker price. I would seriously think twice before purchasing your next vehicle at Car Max. I don't think their employees no how to work a car deal. Their service department is even worse.
We bought a truck at carmax. It was funny because they claim some 100+ point inspection. We took the truck to our mechanic who put it up on a lift and the ENTIRE under side was rusted out. The exhaust what ready to fall out, the break drums were totally rusted, everything was rusted. Our mechanic said it appeared to be in a flood for an extended period. How do you miss that in a so called inspection, Carmax? We took the truck back, obviously, and got our money back but won't shop there again.
