Carmax complaint by Joey Marx
Be VERY careful when buying at CARMAX. Make sure body gaps line up around the entire vehicle. Make sure the paint matches, no overspray.

CARMAX attempted to sell me a 2007 Toyota Landcruiser for $48,000 that had been seriously wrecked. There was wet sand (a material used in body/detail shops) still on the windshield wipers. I couldn't believe my eyes. Does CARMAX think I'm stupid??? The paint job on the front fenders makes Earl Shieb's one day $199 paint job look good. It was horrible I drove out of CARMAX to the Toyota dealership across the street and purchased a 2008 Sequioa that I know hadn't been wrecked...Don't buy unless you've had vehicle inspected by body shop and mechanic or have really good eyes...

I picked up an new car for a fairly good price, under market value but I soon realized things were not right as far as what I was told and what I now own. The car only had one rock chip I was told and no other blemishes and the interior was in great shape. I had the car transferred by the way and took delivery of the car a week ago. Well over the weekend I noticed the bad detailing job that supposedly took three hours, I detail cars and the detail was poor at best. on the exterior there was wax residue on all the plastic trim pieces, a scratch in the front bumper, both side mirror poorly touched up and a rim gash. For the interior there is pet hair in between the seats, a floor stain which i took care of, cleaning residue on the trim pieces, the rear leather seat cover is cracking badly, scuff marks all over the car from a pet, and scratches on the dash board. The "walkaround" was done eyes fully closed. I know these aren't brand new cars but the one i picked up had less then 10k and apparently no blemishes in the interior to the naked eye. I am not going to make a big deal about scuffs but definitely the dash and the seats are an issue. Hopefully it will get resolved without issue.

I was looking at a few vehicles at Carmax, and was told by my insurance agent not to even consider them for purchasing a car. He told me that he had several customers who bought from them and that have had nothing but trouble since. I thought he was exaggerating, so I decided to do a little research on the company, and I'm glad I did. Not only did I find this website and many others like it, but I was able to find the same car at the dealership for less. Don't be duped, Carmax is no better than the scam artists at smaller lots, and are just looking to make easy money.

I too have just purchased a truck from carmax and I was told it had not been damaged in any way other than a scratch or two. But after closer inspection after getting it home, I found that the entire front end had been repainted and that it had a new bumper and grill.

One thing to look for is the manufacturing tag on the inside of all body panels and make sure they are all within a few months of each other a worst.

I am finding that practically all vehicles from carmax are rentals that were wrecked, repaired and sold at auction. The problem is that rental stores like enterprise do not turn wrecked vehicles in on their insurance unless they are totaled, so you wont find out they have been damaged via carfax.

What that allows them to do is sell vehicles that have been wrecked as being in excellent condition.

I would like to see someone try to trade in a vehicle that has been in the body shop and try to get full trade in value for it.........but you can bet it will be sold as new.

You can not trust ANY car dealer....not even if you know them personaly. They are only out to turn a profit...not help you out.

Buy that 04 cadillac. 4 major wrecks and still on the road sounds solid to me...

I don't know if the Acura TL I bought there has been wrecked, but the entire front end (bumper, hood and fenders) has been repainted. I bought the car at Carmax because I thought I didn't need to worry about buying a car there that had been wrecked and/or repainted. WRONG! When I tried to sell my TL recently the dealer lowballed me and showed me all the overspray. Of course I paid full retail at Carmax because I thought I was getting a good car. I won't make this mistake with them again!!

Yeah I had the same experience with them. They were selling a 2004 Cadillac CtS for almost $20,000. I wnet to inspect it before they came into work at the dealership and noticed it was missing an access plate on the rear bumper, so I looked up that vehicle on CARFAX and saw that it had been in 4 major wrecks.
